The Institute for Microbial Biotechnology and Metagenomic (IMBM), University of the Western Cape, is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Fellow.
Research project: OMICS-Guided Discovery of Novel Antimicrobial Peptides from Marine Invertebrate Symbionts
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and conduct innovative research on peptide discovery employing complimentary bioactivity- and genome-guided approaches
- Author/co-author yearly high-quality publication outputs in international journals or book chapters
- Co-supervise postgraduate students
- Initiate projects and apply for competitive funding
- Present research at national and international conferences
- Contribute to academic and intellectual leadership within the IMBM.
Eligibility:
- a PhD in Microbiology, Biochemistry or a related discipline, that was awarded within the past 5 years
- Demonstrated experience in molecular biology and biochemistry techniques. Experience in genetic engineering, enzymology, microbial genomics, and HPLC/LC/GC-MS will be added advantages
- South African citizenship or permanent residence
- Not have held NRF postdoctoral funding previously
The Offer:
- Value: R320 000 per annum, (tax free)
- Support: R50 000 in additional research expensive
- Duration: 1 year, renewable up to 3 years based on performance and funding availability
- Start date: Immediately, but not later than 1 April 2026
- Closing date: 6 February 2026
