BlueRemediomics’ partners to participate in the second BBNJ Preparatory Commission in New York on 18-29 August

BlueRemediomics’ partners from the University of Aberdeen and 3BIO/ABSInt will participate in the second BBNJ Preparatory Commission for the Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ), also known as the High Seas Treaty or Ocean Biodiversity Treaty. The event starts next week in New York and will run until the end of August.

Adopted on 19 June 2023, the BBNJ Treaty aims to protect the deep sea through conservation measures like marine protected areas, while also promoting equitable access to the benefits derived from research on marine genetic resources (MGR) and digital sequence information (DSI) from areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ).

In collaboration with MARBLES and DOSI, BlueRemediomics’ partners have co-authored two key resources to support the implementation of the treaty:

  • Information sheet: “How to engage and contribute to the implementation of the BBNJ Agreement as a marine scientist”
  • Policy brief: “Monetary and non-monetary value of Marine Genetic Resources and Digital Sequence Information under the BBNJ Agreement”.

These documents call on the scientific community to take action and highlight the value of MGRs and DSI in advancing the treaty’s objectives.
