BlueRemediomics partners Prof. Marcel Jaspars (University of Aberdeen) and Thomas Vanagt (3BIO) in collaboration with Fran Humphries (Griffith University) are organising a satellite event at the upcoming BBNJ Symposium 2025, which is set to take place in Singapore from 18-20 February 2025.
The “Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction” (BBNJ), which was adopted on 19 June 2023, brings together international legal and scientific practices, creating an innovative framework for fair and equitable benefit-sharing related to marine genetic resources in areas beyond national jurisdiction.
Against this backdrop, the upcoming symposium will focus on issues pertaining to the ratification and implementation of the BBNJ Agreement, and draw in perspectives from the Asia-Pacific region. It will involve a diverse set of panellists from different sectors, including government, civil society and the research community.
The side event led by UNIABDN and 3BIO will take place on the 20th of February, 09:00 – 12:00 and will focus on “Article 12 in Action: Science-Policy brainstorm on effective implementation of notification requirements”. It will provide guidance and facilitate a discussion among stakeholders about what the treaty means for their current and future research and development (R&D) and commercialisation of marine genetic resources (MGR) in areas beyond national jurisdiction.
Date: 20 February 2025, 09:00 – 12:00
Location: Nutmeg room, Orchard Hotel Singapore
Topic: Article 12 in Action: Science-Policy brainstorm on effective implementation of notification requirements
