BlueRemediomics partners to co-organise a BBNJ event in Aberdeen on 21-22 July

BlueRemediomics’ partners Abbe Brown, Marcel Jaspars and Federica Casolari from the University of Aberdeen will co-organise an event with MARBLESHotBio, the London School of Economics, the Natural History Museum, the Deep-Ocean Stewardship InitiativeJNCCQueen’s University Belfast and the National Oceanography Centre. The event, titled “Implementing the new UN BBNJ Treaty: a deep dive on the value of MGR, BBNJ Batch Identifiers and obligations on scientists” will explore key aspects of the Treaty.

Running for two days, it will host several panel discussions such as “The Value of Marine Genetic Resources” on Monday 21 July and “What’s in it for scientists – advantages of taking part in BBNJ” on Tuesday 22 July as well as exhibitions.

The Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ), is also known as the High Seas Treaty or Ocean Biodiversity Treaty. Adopted on 19 June 2023, the Treaty protects the deep sea through conservation measures like marine protected areas and promotes equity through rules about sharing the benefits from research on marine genetic resources (MGR) of areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ).
